The National Land Commission (NLC) is currently conducting a public hearing on Historical Land Injustices in Port Victoria, Budalangi, Busia County and Kisumu. During this session, the Commission is set to hear four cases, providing a platform for affected parties to share their experiences and submit their oral and documentary evidences.

The four-day exercise is part of the Commission’s mandate to address and resolve historical land injustices throughout the country.
In his remarks, Commissioner Reginald Okumu encouraged participants to speak openly and candidly further advising the parties to explore all avenues before moving to court for dispute resolution.

The hearing panel was chaired by Commissioner Professor James Tuitoek alongside Commissioners Reginald Okumu and Alister Murimi as well as NLC Chairperson Gershom Otachi who joined the meeting virtually.
The Commissioners were supported by the HLI secretariat led by Edmond Gichuru. Raphael Wanjala MP Budalangi Constituency and the Deputy County Commissioner, Busia County Mr. Geoffrey Waini alongside other local leaders joined the proceedings.

The parties were given 14 days to submit any further supporting documents for their cases. The Commission will thereafter retire to prepare determinations and is expected to issue them within the next four months.
